burn for me- first demo

metalcore/melodic death metal from 2003. very much influenced by black dahlia murder, though not as heavy on the thrash and blast-beats. their later material was much more technical and blasting, with the last recording being full-on tech grind/death. members now playing in tech death band sensory amusia

heist-18 gears of hell

not sure when this was recorded/released, possibly around 96. this cd was recorded by stumblefuck from rupture on 4track and though some of the 4track recordings he had done have sounded amazing (the rupture-righteous fuck record for example) though this one unfortunately isn't the best sound. the drums are rather drowned out and it gets a bit messy at times. it was recorded after the previous drummer (dean of rupture, nailed down, sufferance etc) left the band and recording this has undies of brown demon drumming.

the song writing is a little odd, and seems to have a lot of weird stoner rock joke songs and some outright filler with casio drum beats and retarded lyrics, though if you cull all the joke and rock songs there are a handful of genuinely good songs. my picks being "he's an angry man", "oo longdong bourbonsingsong", "dugite blues", "zz dead" and "so many ways to die, no way to live"

jaws-demo

recorded late 05 and released some ridiculously short time after (like one week after the recording was finished?). cover art by yours truly. 80's US style hardcore, ala early NYHC like antidote and abused, plus a little poison idea negative approach etc.

the band went through a lot of names before settling on jaws, they played their first show as "nugget percell and the dropknees" due to not having a name by that time. some of the possibilities i personally thought were better than jaws, eg blow you brains out and heads will roll

also note that the tracklisting on the back cover is incorrect. it is as follows.
7) rock bottom
8) boring

the magoos-live at hyde park

not sure when this was recorded. .maybe '03 or '04. recorded by max of mongrel country.
james vinciguerra (of AIDS, soviet valves, the collapse, jaws etc) was playing drums for them at this point so its a lot faster than their demo. the magoos played very raw, punk swedish hardcore ala shitlickers, crude SS, etc though instead of the obligitory anti-war lyrics they had some anti-white, pro jemah-islamia (sp?) vibe hate lyrics going on. brutal indonesian hatred. (i should probably point out that 2 3rds of the band were indonesian to avoid confusion.

this set includes discharge and rats covers.

cachexia-forkin baldies

from '94. this band sounds riff wise a little similar to rupture, though the song structures and drumming is a little more death metal. i heard this band a one point had two vocalists though one was a pro-surfer, so they often played shows and recorded without him due to him surfing elsewhere.

extortion-demo

shoddy 4-track recorded tape demo from early '05. the first 10 or 20 also had a cover of black flags-fix me (as they were recorded from the master tape) but it got all fucked up when recorded onto digital format, which the rest of the demo tape's were recorded from.
this is very early stuff for the band and quite different to where the band ended up. whilst still fast, it has a lot more negative approach type hardcore punk in the song writing.

* edit- this link has expired and i'm leaving it so until the repress of the demo on 7" through coffin cut records has sold. its a small pressing so shouldn't last too long.

hellbound-blasphemy tape

thrash metal from '93. the cover art of this tape was drawn by zombo of rupture.

don't know much about these guys, though i think some of them are still active in the perth metal scene. this is good, though the songs are a little long, the shortest being a little over four minutes, so it's more suited to people with more metal attention spans than my ADD ridden self

halo of knives-eat god

recorded in 2003, the bulk of it in 2 hours at the end of the session collapse had booked to record their demo (which was later released as the self titled 7" on endless blockades and split 7" with in name and blood) this recording was released first as a CDr demo just after it was recorded and then shelved until its release in 2005 on sydney label grindhead records.

halo of knives consisted of james, me, jay (who later went on to play guitar in extortion) and simon. musically it was prettty stock standard grind, though of the more hardcore variety than metal, halo of knives was pretty much a heavier continuation of AIDS. heavy on the blastbeats. broke up fairly soon after recording due to simon moving to melbourne.

nailed down-atrocious damnation

released '96 on german label ecocentric records as a 10". this one is a lot different to violent distortion, which was released a year or two earlier, a different drummer and a different style, more swedish d-beat thrash with simpler song structures. the recording is quite raw as it was taken from rehearsal tapes that were sent to mattias of ecocentric as demo tracks for an example of the new album, but he loved the sound so much he decided to put it out as it was.

the record was poorly recieved and got some bad reviews. i personally think this is great, awesome brutal recording and real negative riffs. my only qualm is that it is, at 27 songs, a little too long. with music of this style, even though i'm a fan, my attention still starts to wane at about 16 songs or so.

debbie gibson

this is the only recording debbie gibson have, from a rehearsal. note that the track titles on the mp3s are most probably not correct, just what i'd picked up from what they yell at the start of each song.

the following is an excerpt from the debbie gibson entry on the whalehammer blog. i'd also like to point out that whalehammer is the heaviest band name ever concieved. i mean, fuck. think about it. brutal.

Debbie Gibson were a short-lived d-beat/hardcore band from Perth, Western Australia. I would say their timespan was approximately late summer, early the-season-that-comes-after 2006. The music was a mixture of thrashy d-beat and occasional blast beats with a bit of an 80's hardcore scrappy feel and liberal doses of chaotic feedback. Their influences were Discharge, Rudimentary Peni and modern Scandinavian/Amerikan d-beat acts. The lineup was Zaheer on guitar, Luke on bass, David on vox and Rama on drums. Zaheer and Rama had previously played in the quite popular asian-power crust/d-beat punk band The Magoos.

rupture-righteous fuck

released in '91 on swiss label off the disk records, who also released the first infest LP. i would say this 7" is my favourite rupture release and probably the first of their releases that had the "rupture"sound. swedish hardcore riffs, complete with mob47 style buzzsaw guitar tone and blasting siege style drumming. previous to this release rupture were a rather sub-par grind band, dated sounding guitar effects, sloppy drumming and some cookie-cutter politcal lyrics that said things heard a thousand times before. this record, whilst still having a rather politcal slant and whilst does not get as bizarre or offensive as later rupture releases, does feature lyrics that had a real hatred for the sheep mentality and rhetoric in the hardcore scene as well as some more irreverent lyrics.

the rats-teenage radio

awesome super basic punk from 99. if you asked the man on the street what punk sounded like, this would probably be it. 3 chord songs, raw recording, a drum beat (just one) with no rolls, no frills and no cymbals bar the hihats and songs like "d'ya wanna root?". cd also contains a killer cover of wire's 'mr suit'.

the rats used to play pretty much every weekend, mostly at the hyde park hotel, i have good albeit blurry memories of this band. guitarist don rat went on to form scumrock band the homicides after the demise of this band in 2001

cobra clutch-gay shit for faggots

this was a shortlived band featuring rhys davies of squandered, dan of jed whitey and andrew of the dead ends. they formed to play some dwarves/zeke inspired speed-rock, with a little US hardcore chucked into the mix. songs have amazing lyrics about rockingham bogans, pawn shops, porno and an amazing song entitled "the world health organisation vs poison idea".
their live shows were equally irreverent, where much of the time on stage was spent talking shit on the audience.

before rhys left for the UK for an extended holiday they got into the studio and recorded this (late 05), though it was never released due to the band being unhappy with the finished sound (they thought it sounded too clean)

insurrection-demo tape

from '84. peace punk, complete with male and female vocals (for extra added social equality). though the tracks on the yuppify or die comp didn't impress me, i think this is really quite good.

this band features matt snashall on bass, who happened to play in pretty much half of the punk bands in perth in the 80's (mob vengence, pestilence, resurrection, blood and water, etc)

nailed down-violent distortion

(original 3" cd cover art)

(10" repress cover art)

this one was originally recorded and released in '95 on 3" cd on japanese label profane existance far east, but has been repressed numerous times. killer powerviolence with a big japanese hardcore influence, this one is a lot faster than the honour and glory recording due to dean of heist playing drums on this recording. the songs are also a lot more technical in structure. its a real dark sounding record, i remember first hearing this and thinking the people who made it must have had something really wrong with them. menacing sound.

it was repressed later on 10" vinyl, but the artwork was changed due to the label having some issue with the nazi imagery on the 3" cover, which is odd considering the image was taken from some anti-nazi propaganda from WWII.

jed whitey-this machine kills hippies

this 7" contains four of the faster songs from their "mongoloid cage match" LP that came out in 01 plus a cover of jealous again. It was released on swedish hardcore label busted heads (run by 138 from DS13) a year or two after the LP.

jed whitey began as a stoner rock band in 98 and apparently they used to tune down to G, which is a league heavier than any metal band in perth i've heard of. Sentences such as "hey thats rather heavy" have been said after listening to such sounds. they eventually tuned up to standard and start playing fast, more straight-forward detroit rock, though with a real aggressive punk vibe about them and had a few early poison idea style US hardcore songs in their sets (see the butler did it & we used your record as a beer coaster on this 7") and covered a lot of classic hardcore songs.

chickenshit-live tape

this was recorded live at the castle (not the dank pit that is the castle in northbridge, another venue, i think it was in scarborough? not sure) may of '95 and released on Don Rats (or Don Gonad as he was known at the time) Pagan Waste tape label.

really fast and noisy recording, their studio recorded material is pretty similar (actually i prefer the live recording) everything is just an insane fast blur. I guess this is what Maximum Rocknroll would call "mince-core" or "blur-core" in record reviews.

the victims-all loud on the western front

this is a compilation of all the material recorded by the victims, all of which i believe was recorded in 1978. the songs were found on the television addict single, and a self titled e.p. and it also has a few unreleased tracks. its really catchy poppy punk, really well written songs and good sound quality given when it was recorded.

this discography was released a few years back on timberyard records, i think with the permission of the drummer, james baker. the guitarist, dave faulkner (who went on to be in the hoodoo gurus after the demise of the victims) did not okay this and upon hearing of its release got it pulled off the shelf. this may have to do with some ongoing ole fashin' feudin' between the two.

all in deep shit-negative reply split tape

recorded late 2001 at begerk studios, the day booked mainly to record negative reply (their first recording with james vinci on drums) with the AIDS material recorded in a spare half an hour at the end of the day (their last recording with kim mcconchie on guitar). both recordings came out sounding good and it was released in early 2002 on tape.

a scan of the full cover is included in the zip file, complete with ridiculously long winded thanks list. maybe inspired by AVO?

rupture-baser apes

this one came out in '93 and was released on the revered (well, if you're into fast hardcore at least) slap-a-ham records.
i personally think the mix on this is a bit bung. the vocals are awesome and one of gus's better performances , but mixed so loud that they kind of obscure the guitars at points, which sucks cos they're some killer riffs. still worth listening to of course, i'm just saying this in comparison to some of their other releases.
.
just a rumour i heard: the cover for this 7" was originally going to be something along the lines of the heist-pain is causing life 7", i.e very much in the infest vein, but the label returned it and said to re-do it and the resulting masterpiece is the cover you see above. definite improvement on the first, more generic idea.

rothgar-inside the glass confines

i was turned onto this band by paul at perthmusic blog.
this tape is top-notch thrash metal from '92, really well written and played despite the young age of the members (i believe they ranged in age from 16-18 at the time this was released? and they've another two releases in the years preceding this too). some metallica and slayer thrash with a lot of melodic riffs in there too. the drummer went on to drum for N.I.L. and killing heidi

a bus crash decapitation-demo

this one is a little more recent, from 07.
a really mix of all things thrashy, the music has a straight-up hardcore thrash sound, though sometimes the odd thrash metal or grind riff sneaks in, and of the two vocalists one has a raspy crusty sound, the other total death grind toilet bowl gurgle low end vocals.

after they disbanded, the drummer, guitarist and one of the vocalists (though the guitarist is now a vocalist and the vocalist is on bass. if this confuses you re-read the sentence a few times, it'll come good) went on to form suffer.

black sheep-'83 tape

as the title suggests, this came out in '83 (duh). simple, fast, catchy songs with a rad super distorted chainsaw to the eardrums guitar sound (i'd describe its sounding somewhat like electrified cardboard (i'm not sure why though)). just basic punk hardcore, real bare bones stuff.

my only qualm with this tape is the ridiculous length of the samples (bits of talkback radio and news reports. politically relevant to the songs, but reeeally boring) before almost every song, which in many cases are actually longer than the song it precedes!

heres an australian scene report from US punk magazine maximum rock'n'roll, no.99 aug '91. its written by kim benjamin (nailed down, resolute, pestilence etc) and has a detailed report on the perth punk/hc scene at the time.

controlled by fear-demo

recorded in 88 and was never officially released (hence no cover). this band features gus chambers (andrew sheen) and stumblefuck (matt weiland) who both went on to form rupture and sounds pretty similar to their early-mid 90's output, though a lot sloppier and with a lot of generic politcal lyrics. the whole anti PC thing seems to have developed a few years into ruptures existence. the bassist, neal went on to form the instrumental band cucuhlainne powerhead

all in deep shit-infection tape

this was recorded in 2002, but wasn't released until 2006. effectively its the leftover tracks from the self titled 7" that came out in 2003, shelved until dan of "needle in a guy's ass" tape label got in contact asking to put it out.

not sure how many were made but it disappeared pretty quickly.
a quick note: the song "paranoia" has also appeared on the demo and the split tape with negative reply though under the title "she taught us" (the original title was supposed to be "she taught us to be paranoid") though this version is the only one with the curious line "i live in pannawonnica". another note: i had to google to find the correct spelling of "pannawonnica".

the scientists

frantic romantic 7" single
this 7" was released in 79 and is different to the majority of their output, being more of a power pop/pop punk sound than the swampy rock they evolved into. i think james baker (also drummed for the victims as well as numerous other bands) may have had some writing contribution to these songs.

nailed down-honour and glory

this was released on six weeks records in 97, though it was recorded earlier, in 93 or 94. it was released on 8" flexi format and as such has pretty bad sound quality. luckily these tracks are ripped from a cdr of the master, so the sound is great, though i'm uploading them sans the two live tracks on the end of the flexi, you'll have to hunt down a copy if you want to hear them.
i may be mistaken, but i believe this recording was originally going to be released on spiral objective records as a 7" as there is mention of a possible spiral objective release in interviews made around the time it was recorded. i'm just making assumptions here so don't take my words as fact or you may get us both in the shit you numbskull.

nailed down has gone through many members and different styles and this release is more along the lines of japanese hardcore meets siege style that they started out as. kim sounds super angry on this one too.

dead hand/negative reply split tape

recorded live at the first house show at 208 in march of 2001.
both bands are pretty sloppy on this and the recording was done with a mic hanging from the lighting fixture, but the sound has come out good considering, the only instrument that is inaudible (luckily) is pete from dead-hand's horrifically, permanently and therefore mysteriously out of tune guitar.
the only recorded output by dead-hand and some very old material by negative reply, some songs only existing on this tape.

heist

heist were a ripping fast hardcore band from the early to mid 90's. for the most part they were soley a studio band, due to the drummers distaste to playing live (he stated in an interview "i really couldn't be bothered to waste my time playing for a bunch of humanoids who probably wouldn't like it anyway").
Though after recording the 2 7"s they got another drummer and recorded a pretty shoddy 22 song cd and may have played live, but i'm not sure as my only contact with the band is with the old drummer (who also played in rupture, nailed down, excretion, sufferance and currently plays for extortion)

self titled 7" (also known as the bloodstained ep)
Recorded in 1993 or 1994 i think. top notch fast hardcore. this one was released on german label ecocentric records.

pain is causing life 7"
recorded the year after the self titled. felix from havoc records contacted the band after hearing the previous record and they wrote this. the ep was written is something like 3 practices or something equally ridiculous. as such it sounds like there is a few filler songs in there, but most songs are still blazing.

and here's a rip of a reheasal recording for the self titled. theres no vocals and it was recorded on a boom box, so it sound raw as your grandparent fucking at your wedding. anyone who is not a huge fan of heist or is going to be a princess about sound quality need not apply.
